Fabio Attanasio is 26 years old and he is, undoubtedly, a fashion icon of Italy by his blog, “The Bespoke Dudes”, and by his constant presence at the Pitti Uomo fair, the “middle” of the international fashion industry. He lives in Milan, which is a real source of inspiration in matter of style, both feminine and masculine. In 2012 he launched the blog called „The Bespoke Dudes”, a guide for the men who appreciate the personal style of the clothes made especially for them. Even if he graduated from law school in Milan, Fabio became popular thanks to his passion for clothing, as the founder of “The Bespoke Dudes” and as a journalist for a luxury and lifestyle magazine in Italy. Vive a Milano, che è una vera fonte d'ispirazione in termini di stile, sia maschile che femminile. Nel 2012 ha lanciato il blog The Bespoke Dudes, una guida per gli uomini che apprezzano lo stile personale e gli abiti su misura. Nonostante si sia laureato in giurisprudenza a Milano, Fabio è diventato popolare per la sua passione per l'abbigliamento, sia come editor di The Bespoke Dudes che come giornalista per una rivista di lusso a Milano. Fabio Attanasio: Naples untill I was 19, then I moved to Milan.

Where have you studied? Any fashion/art studies?
I graduated from law school at Bocconi University.

What does The Bespoke Dudes mean and what do they believe in?
“Bespoke” is a British word meaning a garment made to the customer’s specification. The Bespoke Dudes is a blog addressed to all the “dudes” who appreciate the pleasure of owning a cloth item exclusively made for them, who love the quality, the details and the craftsmanship behind those creations. The Bespoke Dudes blog believes in the importance of the craftmanship who represent the true made in Italy today. The Fashion system is gradually returning to appreciate the tailoring again and that’s a good signal.
Cosa significa "The Bespoke Dudes" e in cosa crede il tuo blog?
"Bespoke"è un termine inglese che indica un indumento creato secondo le specifiche del cliente. The Bespoke Dudes (letteralmente "I tipi su misura") si rivolge a tutti i "dudes" che sanno apprezzare il piacere di possedere un capo fatto esclusivamente per loro, che amano la qualità, i dettagli e l'artigianalità che c'è dietro quelle creazioni. TBD crede nell'importanza dell'artigianato che rappresenta il vero patrimonio dell'Italia. Il settore moda oggi sta gradualmente tornando ad apprezzare la sartoria come faceva un tempo, e questo è un buon segno.
What s the story of The Bespoke Dudes?
Being Italian, I had always loved clothes and male elegance. During university years, I could spend the whole day looking for inspiration on channels like Tumblr or blogs, and I used to have my laptop stuffed with outfit ideas, colours, landscapes, cities etc. I actually decided to lauch TBD during my stay in Buenos Aires. I was there for a grant, far from my habits; the city was awesome and full of elegant aged gentlemen who were a true source of inspiration. Back in Milan, I decided it was the right time to give vent to this passion.
Qual è la storia di "The Bespoke Dudes"?
Essendo italiano, ho sempre amato i vestiti e l'eleganza maschile. Durante gli anni dell'università, ero capace di passare intere giornate in cerca di ispirazione su canali come Tumblr o blog ed avevo un laptop zeppo di idee di outfit, abbinamenti di colori, paesaggi, città ecc. In realtà ho deciso di lanciare TBD durante il mio soggiorno di sei mesi a Buenos Aires. Ero lì per una borsa di studio, lontano dalle mie abitudini; la città era magnifica e piena di anziani ed eleganti gentiluomini che alle volte erano una vera e propria fonte di ispirazione. Tornato a Milano, ho deciso che era giunto il momento di dare sfogo a questa passione.
What does style mean to you? How did it help you in your career?
Maybe style is just a journey, something that a man builds every day, as a result of his experiences, life events and taste. Perhaps it helped me in some circumstances, but most of all it’s my will to learn that helped most.
Cosa significa lo stile per te? Come ti ha aiutato nella tua carriera?
Forse lo stile e solo un viaggio, qualcosa che un uomo costruisce ogni giorno, come risultato delle sue esperienze, della sua vita e del suo gusto. Forse mi ha aiutato in qualche circostanza, ma soprattuto è il mio desiderio di imparare che mi ha aiutato maggiormente.
How would you describe your style, what’s your philosophy in styling?
My style is a continuously evolving classic. I like to think that today I can wear the same blazer that my grandpa would have worn 50 years ago, but with a fresh and updated take.

Il mio stile è un clasico in continua evoluzone. Mi piace pensare che oggi potrei indossare lo stesso blazer appartenuto a mio nonno 50 anni fa, ma con un fit più giovane e aggiornato.
Which are the first 3 most valuable style advice that you would give to someone?
Don’t show off; know the rules of well dressing and break them (within certain limits); buy less, but buy better.
Quali sono i primi consigli di stile che daresti a qualcuno?
Mai ostentare; conosci le regole del vestire bene e violale (entro certi limiti); compra meno, ma compra meglio.
Can a man be stylish without being fashionable?
Of course. Style and fashion are two completely different matters. Style is a long-lasting concept whereas fashion fades, for definition, every season. A man with style is the designer of his own clothes. A fashionable man is just someone dressed by someone else.
Un uomo può avere stile senza essere alla moda?
Certo. Stile e moda sono due cose completamente differenti. Stile è un concetto duraturo, laddove la moda è qualcosa che svanisce, per definizione, in ogni stagione. Un uomo con stile è il designer dei suoi stessi abiti. Un uomo alla moda è solo qualcuno vestito da qualcun altro.
Which is the best definition of elegance, in your own point of view?
Elegance is an attitude. It pertains to the inner sphere and the clothes are just the external representation of it.
Qual è per te la migliore definizione di eleganza?
L'eleganza è un'attitudine. Appartiene alla sfera interna di ognuno di noi ed i vestiti sono solo una rappresentazione esterna di essa.
What defines an ideal bespoke suit?
A suit that tries to cover the “flaws” of the customer, yet highlighting his qualities, with a colour that is suitable for his skin and a pattern suitable for his height.
Quando si può definire perfetto un abito su misura?
Un abito su misura è perfetto quando copre i difetti del cliente e ne esalta le qualitaà, ha un colore adeguato alla carnagione ed una fantasia adatta alla sua altezza.
Which are the most important features of the Neapolitan tailor? What should an amateur know about it?
A Neapolitan tailor generally makes a very light blazer, with boat-shaped breast pocket, no shoulder padding, front pleats till the bottom, high collar, “pignata” patch pocket (pot-shaped).
Quali sono le caratteristiche più importanti di un sarto napoletano? Cosa dovrebbe sapere un amatore?
Un sarto napoletano di solito fa un blazer molto leggero, con taschino a barchetta, senza spalline, roprese sul davanti fino alla fine, collo alto e tasca applicata "a pignata" (a forma di pentola).
Which are the most precious advice/s you received about tailoring?
Finding the right tailor is like finding the girl of your life! ;)

You are a constant presence at Pitti Uomo, a phenomenon which became so popular in Italy (and not only). How would you describe it to someone who never heard of it?
Pitti Uomo is an important Italian fair gathering people from the menswear industry coming from all over the world.
Sei una presenza costante al Pitti Uomo, un fenomeno che è diventato molto popolare in Italia e all'estero. Come lo descriveresti a qualcuno che non ne ha mai sentito parlare?
Pitti Uomo è un'importante fiera italiana che raggruppa persone del settore abbigliamento provenienti da tutto il mondo.
How did Pitti Uomo help you along the time? How important do you find the growth of this community?
It helped me in terms of visibility. The growth of the pitti community is a signal that this fair represents a true source for the menswear industry.

Pitti mi ha aiutato in termini di visibilità. La crescita della comunità Pitti è un segnale importante del fatto che questa fiera è la culla del vero menswear.
Tell us the golden rules of combining colours. How can someone choose many (courageous) colours in the same outfit and still be stylish?
Well, I don't feel like I know all the rules of combining colors. I can just say that as for the suits, I never wear trousers that are darker than the jacket. If I wear a bold colour (say, yellow) I try to tone it down choosing simply-coloured items and accessories. Lastly, never overdress.
Dicci le regole d'oro nell'abbinare i colori. Come si possono scegliere molti colori audaci nello stesso outfit ma risultare comunque eleganti?
Beh, non credo di conoscere tutte le regole d'oro nell'abbinare i colori. Posso solo dire che per quant riguarda gli abiti, non indosso mai dei pantaloni più scuri della giacca. Se indosso un colore audace (es. giallo) cerco sempre di sdrammatizzarlo scegliendo accessori ed indumenti dai colori semplici ed in tinta
unita. Infine, mai esagerare.
In terms of personal branding, how do you think a man can improve his brand, in all the aspects (clothes, lifestyle, gestures, manners, attitude etc.)?
It depends on his will of learning. I can learn a lot also going out for a pizza with a friend that I consider elegant and see how he moves in certain circumstances. You can learn from books, movies, your family, wherever.
In termini di personal branding, come pensi che un uomo possa migliorare il suo "brand", sotto aspetti quali i vestiti, lo stile di vita, i gesti, le buone maniere, l'attitudine, ecc..?
dipende dalla sua voglia di imparare. Io posso imparare molto anche uscendo a mangiare una pizza con un amico che considero elegante e guardando come si muove in alcune circostanze. Puoi imparare dai libri, dai film, dalla tua famiglia, dovunque.
How important is education for you? How can you define the link between education and personal branding?
Essential. There is no elegance without education.
Quanto è importante per te l'educazione? come definiresti il collegamento tra l'educazione ed il personal branding?
Essenziale. Non c'è eleganza senza educazione.
What is your definition of gentleman and what does it take to be considered a gentleman in today’s culture?
A gentleman to me is a man who always knows how to behave in every occasion. He is a respectuful and well-educated person, who expresses his taste with his actions, his way of living and, lastly, with his clothes.
Qual è la tua definizione di gentiluomo e cosa ci vuole oggi per essere considerato tale?
Un gentleman per me è un uomo che sa sempre come comportarsi in ogni occasione. E' una persona rispettosa e ben educata, che esprime il suo gusto attraverso le sue azioni, il suo modus vivendi ed, infine, con i suoi vestiti.
Can bespoke tailoring be appreciated by younger generations or is it just a field reserved for a more mature client?
I am sure it will be appreciated by younger generations more and more in the forthcoming future. My mission is to inform people about the charm of bespoke tailoring, to encourage a return to the times when people appreciated the pleasure of owning a garment that lasted their lives.
La sartoria su misura può essere apprezzata dalle generazioni più giovani o è solo un campo riservato ad una clientela più matura?Sono certo che la sartoria sarà apprezzata sempre di più dai giovani nel futuro prossimo. La mia "mission"è informare le persone sul fascino della sartoria, per incoraggiare un ritorno ai tempi in cui le persone apprezzavano il piacere di possedere un capo che durasse tutta la loro vita.
