Some weeks ago, I had the pleasure to meet Nicoletta Caraceni, Ferdinando's daughter and owner of F. Caraceni Sartoria, one the most renowned tailor shops in Italy. Nicoletta is a very kind and lovely person and accepted to have a chat with me. I enjoyed listening to her, especially to the stories of her childhood and her trips to Paris or Rome, along with her father, to meet classy gentlemen willing to wear a Caraceni suit, entirely hand-made. Alcune settimane fa ho avuto il piacere di incontrare Nicoletta Caraceni, figlia di Ferdinando, nonché attuale proprietaria della Sartoria F. Caraceni, uno dei templi dell'abbigliamento classico da uomo, del vero "su misura" e del made in Italy. L'ho raggiunta nel suo laboratorio di Via San Marco a Milano ed ho passato diverse ore in sua compagnia, totalmente affascinato dai suoi racconti, nonchè dall'eleganza di un salotto in cui il tempo sembra essersi fermato a 50 anni fa, dove tutto è gelosamente e appositamente conservato "come allora", in omaggio alla tradizione e ad uno stile sartoriale immune dalle mode stagionali. Who?
Nicoletta Caraceni, Ferdinando’s daughter. In the 80’s I joined the company, founded in 1967 by Augusto Caraceni, a relative also coming from Ortona a Mare, Abruzzo.

Nicoletta Caraceni, figlia di Ferdinando. Eredita l’azienda fondata nel 1967 da Augusto Caraceni, un parente. Originari di Ortona a Mare in Abruzzo.
How would you describe F. Caraceni’s style?
Our style is classic, but we also pay attention to customers’ tastes. We advise them in order to correct any possible body asymmetry; we don’t follow the seasonal fashion, yet “il costume” inevitably has some effect on customers’ requests. In the 80’s, people were asking for blazers with padded shoulders because everyone was wearing jackets that way; ten years before, nobody would have worn them. One of our British customers used to say: “British suits are stuffy, yours are sexy”.
We produce a maximum of 300 suits per year and almost all our fabrics come from the United Kingdom; some are also by Zegna, because it’s a very innovative company.
The clientele overall has changed a lot over the years: in the 70’s, a bespoke suit would only be ordered by the aristocrats, who knew well what quality was; today there are people with a lot of money, but little elegance, who just go to the tailor's for the “brand”. In our workshop, we have neither machinery nor computers. The furniture is still the original one, in order to highlight the deep respect for the Italian traditional craftsmanship. We also have a Livre d'or (pictured below) with comments of the personality who have been our customers
Come descriverebbe il suo stile?
Il nostro stile è classico, ma segue i gusti dei clienti, li orienta, li instrada, li aiuta per migliorare eventuali asimmetrie o difetti di postura. Caraceni non segue la moda, ma "il costume", negli anni, inevitabilmente ha un certo effetto sui gusti dei clienti: negli anni 70 era di moda la spalla insellata, negli anni '80 tutti portavano la spalla grande. Un nostro cliente inglese una volta mi disse: "Gi abiti inglesi sono stuffy, quelli di caraceni sono sexy".
Tutt’oggi abbiamo una produzione di massimo 300 capi all'anno. I tessuti in maggioranza inglesi. Alcuni sono di Zegna perché è un'azienda molto innovativa.
La clientela purtroppo è cambiata: prima era composta solo da veri signori, che conoscevano bene la qualità e il valore di un capofatto a mano; ora c’è tanta gente con molto denaro e poca signorilità, che viene qui solo per il "brand". Nel laboratorio non ci sono macchinari, gli arredi sono ancora quelli di un tempo, a testimonianza del nostro profondo rispetto per la tradizione sartoriale italiana. What makes Caraceni suits so special?
A Caraceni suit is completely handmade and, before the making, three tests with the customer are needed to ensure a millimetric fitting. Our unique signature is the high collar, a proper fitting armhole and the lapel with a “belly” (pictured below), hand-cut by the tailor himself.
Here we pay particular attention to the fit, we respect proportions. Shoulder, sleeve and lapels must follow the shape of the body and don’t “flee” if you raise you arm (that's the so called "bus test")
Cosa rende un abito Caraceni così speciale?
Un abito Caraceni è interamente fatto a mano e sono previste 3 prove con il cliente al fine di assicurare un vestibilità "al millimetro". La nostra firma è il collo alto, il giromanica calzante e il revere “con la pancia” (vd. foto sotto). Il tutto rigorosamente tagliato dalle mani esperte dei nostri sarti. Il revere è rigorosamente non tirato a squadra, ma tagliato a mano dal sarto. Si presta grande attenzione al “fit”, al rispetto delle proporzioni. La spalla, la manica e il revere non devono “scappare”, cioè staccarsi dal collo durante i movimenti. La leggenda vuole che Ferdinando Caraceni facesse "la prova del tram" per capire se un abito fosse ben fatto o meno: in pratica, alzando il braccio come per afferrare la maniglia di un mezzo pubblico, il quarto anteriore e la spalla non dovevano staccarsi dal corpo.

What’s your earliest memory related to menswear and style?
By far my father, Ferdinando. He believed that not only a suit should be well done, but also the customer has to wear it properly. In the summertime, he was usually wearing an ivory or cream double-breasted suit, a watch on the shirt cuff and some hand-made shoes. He used to say: “Elegance is forgetting what you are wearing”.
Qual è il suo primo ricordo legato allo "stile" e all'abbigliamento da uomo?
Di sicuro mio padre Ferdinando. Diceva che il cliente un bell’abito deve anche saperlo portare. D’estate indossava un doppiopetto avorio o beige, scarpe fatte a mano, orologio sul polsino. Era solito dire:"Eleganza è dimenticarsi ciò che si ha indosso".
A style tip?
It’s better one bespoke suit, rather than two ready-to-wear.
Un consiglio di stile?
Meglio un abito dal sarto, che due confezionati.
Any eccentric request from a customer?
A Russian man ordered a suit on Monday and wanted it to be ready by Saturday, offering to pay three times more. We didn’t accept, because we couldn’t cut a perfect suit in five days.
Richieste stravaganti di clienti?
Un cliente russo chiese un abito il lunedi e lo pretese pronto per il sabato, offrendo di pagare 3 volte in più. Non abbiamo accettato, perché non possiamo realizzare un abito perfetto in soli cinque giorni.
